Eco Diesel designed in Europe

It seems that GM Powertrains has once again turned to its european divisions for the Cruze powerplant:

The current 1.4LT gasoline engine is a GM-Opel designed engine that is now manufactured at Flint, Michigan, for North American vehicles. Similarly, the new Eco-Diesel is being developed by GM Powertrain divisions in Turino, Italy, and Russelsheim, Germany, as a 'global' engine for both European and North American use.

Quote: "Particulate-capturing filtration systems dramatically reduce tailpipe emissions."[ GM ], which means 'something else' (DPF fluid) to have to buy with the diesel engine, an additional operational "cost."

...and, now, LeftLane says it'll be a smaller, 1.7LT diesel engine, rather than the larger 2.0LT diesel engine:

what do you think the motivation behind designing an entirely new engine for the US market is?

..."smaller" turbocharged engines are the next BIG thing for "global" GM, with higher fuel co$ts driving that movement.
